Rhône-Alpes : the Second Economic Region of France

Rhône-Alpes represents the second economic region of France by the size of its population and the highly concentrated industrial activities.

 

Research and Innovation
A Remarkable Pool of Scientific Expertise
Rhône-Alpes is the second French region in terms of research potential:

  • 11.5% of the French research potential.
  • 38,000 persons work in the R&D field, including 20,000 researchers (60% in private research, 40% in government research).
  • Approximately 20,000 students study health care and life sciences out of 180,000 students registered in our region.

Research Clusters
In our field of activity, the regional pharmaceutical companies focus on two main orientations:

  • Infectiology
  • Handicap, ageing, neurosciences.

Technological Development
More than ten years ago, the Rhône-alpes region, the “réseau des villes” and the local government delegations (DRIRE, DRRT) implemented a network of specialized technological clusters and agencies, gathered in 2008 in the Agence Régionale du Développement et de l’Innovation: ARDI Rhône-Alpes.

Plastic Processing: 20% of the national activity : www.plasticway.com

Chemical Industries: 12% of the national workforce : www.chimie-rhonealpes.org
Subcontracting Industries: 21% of the workforce of the industrial services for metal working (mechanics, bar turning operations, metallurgy, metal processing and surface treatment, etc.)
Rhône-Alpes, the first region in France in the field, has a highly specialized expertise in the biomedical industry : www.rhone-alpes.cci.fr
All that without forgetting the Textile and Electronic Industries : 15% of the national activity.
